Isaiah Chapter 22- The One Who Has The Key
Isaiah 22:15-25 - The story of Shebna & Eliakim {these were of two
those Hezekiah sent to meet messengers of Assyria and when they came
against Jerusalem (2Kings 18).
Verse 15 - Shebna the treasurer, The one over the house. Shebna was
the steward of king Hezekiah’s palace.
Verse 16 - Shebna’s sepulchre: Sepulchre is usually associated with
one who deserves honor, the king, head of the household, Moses
(Deuteronomy 34: 5-6). Here it seem Shebna had become had become so
comfortable in his role as head of the king’s house that he had
built a sepulchre or a burying place in or near the palace, he was
elevating himself to the level of the king. The question was what is
this that you are building, what office do you hold? Who hast thou
here - could he have set his friends around him to strengthen his
position or those he appointed to hew his sepulchre. Shebna’s
sepulchre was going to be in a very eminent, likely even more so
that the sepulchre of the kings of Judah. This place was reserved
for Hezekiah 2Chronicles 32:33
Verse 17-19: Proverbs 16:18 states” Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit before a fall“ .Shebna will be brought down
from his prestigious position. The strong hand of the Lord will rest
on him and toss him like one tosses a ball out down from his office
and position. They would often cover the face of the accused in
shame. The LORD was going to bring him down. {Shebna was not
executed but made a just a scribe or secretary (Isa 36:3) may have
been more humiliating that death Isa 36:3
Verse 20 - 24 - When The LORD pulls Shebna down Eliakim will be
lifted up to the position of head of the kings house (Key of the
house of David) he will wear the robes of this position and head the
government - second in command. His position is secure as something
nailed fast in a secure location. He position will bring honor to
his father.
* Remember Joseph - role Gen 41:41-46 Joseph brought honor to his
father.Gen 47:5-6
The story of these two men is first about the truth of the folly of
self pride and placing oneself above those who God has anointed and
placed in leadership. Here it was Shebna placing himself equal to or
above Hezekial, God’s anointed King of Judah. Today it could be one
who considers himself on rqual terms with his boss or someone (a
deacon or long -time member) who does not recognize the authority of
the pastor and feels he has just as much right to make decisions as
the pastor. It is just as much my church as the pastor’s. Which it
true but the sheep never place themselves above the shepherd. * Note
- Shebna did not bring honor to his father but the results of his
actions would have dishonored his father’s name.
Secondly is is about who places those in leadership roles in His
house. It was the LORD who pulled Shebna down and placed Eliakim is
his place and even honors him publicly. He obviously was one who
honored the LORD and the king.
The real story of Shebna & Eliakim
First - Eliakim is obviously a type of Jesus Christ. Revelation 3:7
with Isaiah 22:22.These two verses are all the are needed to
recognize this picture But also read Isaiah 9:6-7& Lu 1:32-33. Jesus
desire was to brinb honor to the Father. He taught our prayer must
first exult and hallow God’s name. John 17:4,6, 26. In “That Day”
Jesus Christ will be exalted and will be seen as Lord of all. We has
that Jesus Christ is The LORD seen throughout the Old Testament and
it was He that was the glory of God that filled the temple and
dwelled between the cherubims that covered the throne that was over
the ark. He was always bring glory to his Father..
Second - Shebna several commentaries liked Shebna’s story to the
coming captivity of Judah and Israel by Babylon. It is true that
Israel esteemed itself much higher then they ever were to be. They
were to be the golry of the LORD for the gentile nations to see.
Israel tried capture the glory due God and was carried into
captivity by a strong hand. But my question is if Shebna is used as
a type of Judah being carried away into captivity who is God going
to use to replace them? The church - absolutely not. Is Jesus (seen
as Elkiakim) going to replace Israel?
Who is Jesus (seen as Elkiakim) going to replace?
Isaiah 14:12-15 Who wanted to set his throne above all God created?

Ezekiel 28: 11-19 Who is the king of Tyrus a type of?
_____________________
Lucifer covered the throne and magnified the glory of God. He became
so full of himself that in is own eyes exalted himself to the level
of God. God pulled him down from form this position and he became
the prince of the power of the air, the worker of disobedience in
children [Ephesians 2:2] and called Satan and the devil. He was the
serpent in Eden.
Israel God nation chosen to be His witnesses and to bring him glory
among the Gentile nations actually ignorantly made Lucifer the
object of their worship when the sacrificed in the “high places” and
offer corrupted animals upon the alter. Satan actually made himself
to be as the king of Israel and Judah as well as the gentile
nations..
In Luke 4:5-7 Satan , the devil offered the glory of kingdom of the
world to Jesus if He would worship him. The glory of thee kingdoms
was given to the devil. Only the creator could give this authority
over the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them to the devil.
Daniel 9:27, 11:36, 12:11; Revelation 13:5-6, - The antichrist who
declares himself to be Christ, the best, the dragon the false
prophet all defile that God declares holy and including His glory.
But in “That Day” all the glory and authority comes back to his (the
devil‘s) Maker, the creator, the Holy One Of Israel, The Lord Jesus
Christ. This is that which is nailed in a sure place - The return of
the Lord to reclaim all the glory and worship due Him.
Luke 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is
my beloved Son: hear him.
What is Satan’s end - taken into captivity - into Hell - Revelation
20:1-3, 10; Isaiah 14:15, 22:18
Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together:
who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that
time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a
just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Isaih 45:21
Next Lesson - More on the nail in a sure place and the burden that
is cut off.
