Chapter 23 Part 1 - Burden of Tyre

Tyre - Joshua 19: 24-31 - A strong city (29) that was part of the inheritance given to Asher - Judges 1:31-32 - states that Asher like most of the other tribes did not drive the inhabitants completely out. Asher chose to dwell among the inhabitants instead of driving them out.

Hiram king of Tyre sent many craftsmen and cedar trees to build David house (2Samuel 5:11) and because he loved David he sent workers gold, timber to Solomon to built the temple.(1Kings 5:1, 9:11)- and as reward Solomon gave Hiram king of Tyre twenty cities in Galilee. These cities were in an area that was poor soil and would take a lot of labor to improve and Tyre was a city of merchants and craftsmen and working to built the soil was labor that was beneath their dignity.

Nehemiah is permitted to rebuilt Jerusalem (Ezra rebuilt the temple) in chapter 13:15-16 there is selling and work taking place on the Sabbath and merchants of Tyre seem to be leading in this abomination.
Although Tyre is never seen as an enemy fighting against Israel but in here in Nehemiah 13 they work within to pollute God’s law.

Psalm 83 we see nations conspiring to destroy Israel (verse4) the inhabitants of Tyre are mentioned (verse 7) as joining the with the Philistines in this conspiracy.

Isaiah 23 - The Burden of Tyre
(Verses 1-3) - describe Tyre an a island, where great wealth is harvested from the waters surrounding the city. Being a place where nations come to do buy and sell.
(Verses 4- 6) - The collapse of Tyre’s economy will sorely affect those who depend on the trade with Tyre. Tyre’s fall will hurt these nations as when great Egypt fell. The wealth that was amassed in Tyre lead to wealth to all nations that traded whit the city.
Verse 7 this great city that brought wealth and pleasure to many nations will be carried off into captivity because of the cities long record of antiquity. [selling to the Jews on the Sabbath (Neh 13:15-16) and working to destroy Israel (Palm 83)]
(Verses 8-9) - The LORD will bring down Tyre and end it’s glory and pride bringing an end to Tyre’s great trade.
(Verses 10-14) - This punishment of Tyre and all the proud nations who traded and were made wealthy through trade with Trye in set in stone - The Lord (shakes the nations) has commanded this to come about. The nations Tyre’s commerce supported and made wealthy were the same nations which Psalm 83 name as wanting to completely wipe Israel off the earth.

(Verse 15) - That day - when Tyre falls
When Tyre falls - Babylon took Tyre about the same time they captured Jerusalem and for the seventy years the Jews serves Babylon Tyre was desolate. When Cyrus (Medo-Pershia) released the Jews he amy have released Tyre also. After these seventy years Tyre begins to rise and pollutes the nations likened to as a harlot.

Verses 15-18 - “That Day”
It appears that Tyre will once again raise and fall in the future and after seventy years Tyre will regain great wealth. But the wealth will be used to honor the LORD by providing for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

Ezekiel 28:11-19 - These verse make it clear that the king of Tyrus is actually Satan or Lucifer in carnet.
He was in the Garden of Eden * He was the anointed cherub * he was created perfect

Mentioned
His merchandise
His many gems
His beauty
His pride
His sins

All seen as characteristics of Tyre in Isaiah 23

So who provoked the Jews in Jerusalem to buy and do business on the Sabbath in Jerusalem (Neh 13:15-16)
Who was instrumental in having making the enemies of Judah and Jerusalem wealthy through trading with Trye?
Who was responsible for Tyre joining is the conspiracy to eliminate Israel from off the face of the Earth as seen in Psalm 83

The answer to these three questions is Satan, Lucifer, the devil.

But who is really in control - (Isaiah 23:11) _____________

When Satan was conspiring to destroy Israel through history (His story) he was actually doing The LORD’s bidding to chastise the Jews to take them to the place of complete and utter despair so they would realize The LORD, he is God and return to Him for salvation. “That Day” when Israel is saved The LORD will once use what Satan plans to use to destroy Israel to actually feed and cloth them (Isaiah 23:15) in their time of trouble.

Is Tyre a person or place? ___________________
The in Ezekiel 28 the king of Tyre (Turus) is seen as a type of Satan. [I believe he is not a type of Satan but I believe he was completely possessed by Satan himself, not another demon.]

To be a king one must have a kingdom. What is Satan’s kingdom? (Luke 4:5-8) _________ ____________

What could Tyrus & Tyre be a type of : this Earth that has made nations wealthy through the resources that God created within it. In reality all wealth, power and glory comes from God’s creation. Creation that was made by The Word, Jesus Christ, The Holy One Of Israel and it was made for His glory.

Today most wealth, power and glory on this Earth is not to the LORD’s glory but to Satan’s. We have seen that The Creator has temporarily has given dominion of this world over to the devil.

There is a “That Day” in Tyre’s future. Verses 15-18 next lesson
