Chapter 50 -

Chapter 49 The LORD tells the gentile nations about Hid relationship with His people. Chapter 50 returns to focus on the southern kingdom of Judah (tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Levi). He may still speaking so the gentiles will hear this also.

Verses 1  - The LORD could not overlook the iniquities of Judah.

The Bill of Divorcement: Deuteronomy 24:1-4 =  When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;  Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Jeremiah 3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. (After Assyria takes the northern kingdom captive she is done as a nation, from that time on the "Israel" never stood as a nation. The some from the northern kingdom actually tried to hinder the work of Judah in rebuilding the temple. (See Ezra 2 & 3) They seem to remain that way until Heb 8:8 is fulfilled.

Fathers sometimes were forced to sell their children into servitude to pay off debts (Exodus 21:7) - There was no way Judah could be sold to recover the debt they owed to the LORD. Who was there that The LORD owed a debt to.

The LORD had not forsaken Judah, They sold themselves completely over to their sins (Isaiah 30:1), they divorced themselves from The LORD by rejecting the covering of His Spirit.

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Malachi 3:18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
Matthew 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The desolation through Babylon was their choice. God used their choice to bring them to a place where He could offer them forgiveness. (Isaiah 22:14),

Verse 2-3 = When The LORD called them to Himself (through repentance) no one answered. The LORD's question to His people - Do you think there is another power that limits His authority to redeem and deliver whom He chooses. He alone causes the rivers to dry and death to come to a dry and thirsty land. I believe He is pointing to the dry bones in the valley mentioned in Ezekiel 37:1-3. He alone can darken the heavens.

Judah was in fault, Judah's iniquities brought the desolation during the Babylonian captivity, who could

Verses 4-5 =  Isaiah now speaks about his qualifications to bring this message to Judah -

*Remember the woes in Chapter 45:910 - The Jews would have despised Isaiah's prophesy of the 70 years of desolation at the hands of the Chaldeans; they would have despised the use of Cyrus to proclaim the glory of The LORD. His claim is his ability to hear and speak to God's chosen people in God given and he did not turn from his mission

Verses 6 - One would think Isaiah was highly respected because he was God's man for the time. But remember The LORD told him he would be delivering a message they reject and refuse to hear the meaning. Instead of being respected he was shabbily treated, beaten and spat upon.

Verses 7-9.= Isaiah remained true to his mission in spite of the way he was received by Judah. Why - he knew The One who called him was near and would help him endure. The ONE who called will justify him and his message. Isaiah knew the Jews could beat him and spit upon him but they could not condemn him.  .

Now reread verses 4-9 with Jesus Christ in mind. Isaiah was also a type of Christ, The Faithful Servant.

Verses 10 - Fear of The LORD brings light - wisdom (Proverbs 15:33 ¶ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility) What is wisdom: trusting in the name of the LORD, and staying upon his God. Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure

Verse 11- What Judah had chosen to stay upon themselves, the end could only bring sorrow, See verse 3 again - With Isa 48: 22 Do sparks take away the darkness of the night - they burn out - Mans' wisdom, mans' glory will is only like a spark in the dark of night quickly going out and the end is only continued darkness and sorrow.

Isaiah Message -

Woe is coming - 70 years oat the hand of the Chaldeans

When Babylon Falls be looking for Cyrus - comfort will be offered

You are going to reject his comfort - no peace for the wicked (Jews)

That Day is coming

The real message

The nation of Israel will reject the comfort offered through Jesus at His first coming

There will be no peace for the wicked (Jews)

When Babylon fall again be looking for The LORD and His comfort

That Day Is Coming
